In the African culture men are seen as superior. Men have more rights and are seen as the leaders, while women are in a way looked down upon. African men take pride in providing for their family by doing the hard work, going hunting, and providing the essentials for their families. A women's job is to stay home take care of the children and the house. This culture believes a women is supposed to clean, cook, take care of the children, and stick to women's work only.
I feel that out of all of the different cultures, this is one where women do not have the rights men do at all. In america women are still not looked upon as equal when it comes to men in some cases, but Africa is far from where America is when it comes to the roles of men and women. This culture is one where the women and children are to be seen, but not heard. When it comes to education the girls are more likely to drop out rather then the boys because many families cannot afford to send them to school. They rather keep the girls home, because in their eyes she will end up providing for the family by doing housework such as cooking and cleaning. They choose the boys to continue their education because they are seen as the bread makers, they will be the ones who will provide financially for the family. I still view Africa as unfair when it comes to the roles of women and men because they are far from equal. The women are given a title as homemakers and this culture feels that they are only good for certain things, when in reality they can do anything a man can do, but they are not given the chance. The men in Africa are seen as the dominant care takers, they are the sole providers of the household and will not do womens work. Sources: http://www.our-africa.org/women |
